How educators and students can unleash creativity, refine visual storytelling, and elevate classroom content with just a few clicks.

Visual media has become a core component of modern teaching and learning. From classroom presentations to school newsletters, from student-led campaigns to curriculum-linked digital storytelling—images speak louder than words. But editing those images? That’s where things often get tricky.

Until now.

Canva’s new AI-Powered Photo Editor makes it easier than ever for teachers and students to create professional, polished visuals with minimal effort and no prior design experience. With intuitive tools powered by deep AI image understanding,

Canva opens up a world of creative possibilities—right from your Canva homepage.

What’s New in the Canva AI Photo Editor?

The Photo Editor is accessible directly from your homepage, marked by a distinctive pink icon in the product menu. Once inside, you'll find all your uploaded photos ready to go, along with a range of intelligent features designed to streamline the creative process.

Let’s explore the newest tools—and how they can make a meaningful impact in your school.

Auto Select: Point-and-Click Precision

What it does

This feature lets you isolate and edit specific parts of a photo without affecting the entire image. Click on any object to adjust its colour, contrast, brightness—or move, remove, or replace it entirely.

A person in a purple-tinted effect sits casually by a blue van. Showcases the auto select feature. They're wearing a letterman jacket with relaxed expression. Background gradient.

Why it’s great for schools

Auto Select is ideal for giving school images a professional finish without needing specialist software. Teachers can easily enhance student yearbook photos by brightening faces without altering the background, making sure everyone looks their best. In creative subjects like art and media, students can experiment with collage designs by swapping elements while maintaining a cohesive visual aesthetic. It’s also a time-saver for admin teams and school marketing efforts, allowing staff portraits or event photos to be polished quickly for use on websites, newsletters, or display boards.

Background Generator: No Green Screen Needed

What it does

With just a simple text prompt, this tool generates brand-new backgrounds that blend seamlessly with your image. The AI intelligently matches lighting, textures, and shadows—even on translucent objects—creating a realistic finish.

Why it’s great for schools

The Background Generator opens up new opportunities for creativity and immersive learning. In history lessons, teachers can transport students into past eras by placing them into historically accurate scenes, bringing time periods to life. Drama departments can use the tool to produce striking promotional posters, adding theatrical backgrounds to student headshots that match the lighting of their stage settings. Geography and science educators can use it to support virtual field trips, helping students visualise different biomes, habitats, or planetary environments—all from the classroom, no green screen required.

‘Inspire me’ tip

Use the “Inspire Me” button when you’re not sure what background to generate. In this photo I used the prompt “a prehistoric landscape populated with dinosaurs - naturistic style”.

Perspective Correction: Real-World Integration

What it does

Vertical and horizontal perspective sliders with purple knob. Vertical set to -12.9, horizontal to 0.8. Plain background.

Located in the Photo Editor, the Perspective Correction tool lets you adjust the vertical and horizontal angles of an entire photo using simple sliders. This is especially useful when you need to straighten or tilt images to create a more natural or intentional angle — ideal for preparing a photo as the base for a design mockup. Whether you're working with a T-shirt, notebook, poster, or even a classroom whiteboard, this tool helps make the background look more front-facing or visually aligned, so your overlaid graphics appear integrated and realistic.  Beyond mockups, it's also great for making architectural photos or creative compositions more dramatic or visually striking — perfect for art classes or portfolio development.

Why it’s great for schools

This tool supports both practical and creative classroom activities. In business or design studies, students can prepare polished product mockups by aligning photos of real objects, then overlaying logos or artwork. It’s also ideal for showcasing branded fundraiser items like school hoodies or mugs in promotional materials. In art and media classes, students can enhance photos of buildings, interiors, or still-life scenes for more dramatic presentation — adding depth and professionalism to their final projects.

Photo Animations: Bring Images to Life

What it does

Add movement and energy to static images using four new animations: Shake Zoom, Whip Slide, Old TV, and Chroma Wave.

Why it’s great for schools

Animations provide a dynamic edge to digital content, making it more engaging for both internal and external audiences. Teachers and students can use them in digital newsletters to spotlight achievements or highlight upcoming events in a way that grabs attention. Social media managers can enhance school announcements with subtle motion, helping posts stand out in busy feeds. In student presentations, animations offer learners a new way to bring their ideas to life, allowing for more expressive and creative storytelling in everything from science fair posters to multimedia projects.
